I designed panel and inline keyboards for the AT&T TV platform. These would replace the default Android TV keyboards to ensure a more consistent experience for the user. It is still possible to install third party keyboards or switch to the default Google keyboards if a user prefers a different functionality or design.
The AT&T TV keyboards support all characters that would be needed for English, Spanish and passwords. User testing was done with ABC and QWERTY layouts as well as positioning the digits above the keyboard and in a 10-key layout. The results of testing showed that entry performance does not differ greatly between ABC and QWERTY but user preference for choosing a particular layout is quite strong regardless of actual performance. For passwords the location of digits and special characters can either increase or decrease entry speed depending on the structure of the password.
Remote control entry shortcuts were added to allow for character deletion, cursor movement and entry completion without having to navigate to onscreen buttons. Support for extended triple tap entry (also known as T-9) was included.
