Based on my work implementing all FCC regulations regarding accessibility and my position as Accessibility Champion, nominated by the Corporate Accessibility Technology Office (CATO), I was responsible for designing the accessibility features of AT&T TV. Due it the foundation of Android TV there were many capabilities already included in the platform, but they were poorly integrated and not all well designed.
Closed Captioning had been in Android TV for some time, yet there were odd design decisions such as the smallest text size being smaller than anyone could read at a normal 10′ TV viewing distance. The CEA-708 standards suggest a range of 200% to 50% but Android TV went down to 25% for some reason. The UI for creating a custom Closed Caption display was customized extensively based on input from CATO and sight impaired users.
The screenreader functionality of Android TV was already the best for any TV platform, but due to the way it was built users had to go into many different settings screens to customize the experience fully. Proposals for redesign were given to Google but ultimately rejected due to their use of different applications to manage screenreader and text to speech functions. I was able to make considerable improvements within those limitations to give users easier control over the basic settings.
